Big waves in Nazaré: when and where to watch.
Every winter the Atlantic sends some of the biggest waves on Earth towards Nazaré. Here is how to see them for yourself, safely and without the crush.
What to know

Why here?
Just offshore lies a deep underwater canyon. It focuses the energy of the swell and aims it straight at Praia do Norte, building waves of twenty metres and more.

When?
The season runs roughly from October to March. The biggest days follow a strong North Atlantic storm. Check a surf forecast a few days ahead.

Where?
The best view is from the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and its lighthouse, on the headland above Praia do Norte. Inside the fort is a small exhibition on the waves and the surfers.
