Our pick

Praia da Nazaré
The town beach: a long crescent of sand with fishing boats and drying racks, sheltered by the Sítio cliff and lined with cafés.
Getting there: a few minutes’ walk from Casa da Olaria.

Praia do Norte
Wild and dramatic, famous for its giant waves. Superb for walking and watching, but swimming here is dangerous.
Getting there: take the Ascensor to the Sítio, then walk to the fort viewpoint (approx. 15 min).

Praia do Salgado
South of Nazaré: dunes, space and often few people. Lovely for a long beach walk.
Public transport: very limited. A car or taxi is easiest.

São Martinho do Porto
An almost circular bay with calm, shallow water. Ideal for children and for trying paddleboarding or kayaking.
By bus: Rodoviária do Oeste, Nazaré–São Martinho, about 15 min.
By train: CP, Linha do Oeste, São Martinho do Porto station (from Valado-Nazaré-Alcobaça). Check current timetable.

Praia de Paredes da Vitória
A small village beach between cliffs, with a few simple fish restaurants.
By bus: Rodoviária do Oeste. In summer there is a seasonal beach bus from Alcobaça; outside summer, service is limited. Check current timetable.

Praia da Foz do Arelho
Where the Óbidos lagoon meets the ocean. On the lagoon side the water is calm and warmer.
By bus: Rodoviária do Oeste to Caldas da Rainha, then the Caldas–Foz do Arelho line. Check current timetable.
