Praia da Nazaré
The town beach: a long crescent of sand with fishing boats and drying racks, sheltered by the Sítio cliff and lined with cafés.
Praia do Norte
Wild and dramatic, famous for its giant waves. Superb for walking and watching, but swimming here is dangerous.
São Martinho do Porto
An almost circular bay with calm, shallow water. Ideal for children and for trying paddleboarding or kayaking.
Praia do Salgado
North of Nazaré: dunes, space and often few people. Lovely for a long beach walk.
Paredes da Vitória
A small village beach between cliffs, with a few simple fish restaurants.
Foz do Arelho
Where the Óbidos lagoon meets the ocean. On the lagoon side the water is calm and warmer.
Good to know
- Watch the flagsThe Atlantic is powerful. Swim where lifeguards are on duty and follow the flags.
- The water is freshEven in summer the sea stays cool. A wetsuit helps for longer swims.
- Go early in July and AugustParking and beach space fill up quickly.
